Promoting new research topics: the RFES Research Fellowship

In order to promote young scholars and recruit excellent research fellows, the Research Focus of Earth Sciences (RFES) at the University of Potsdam did establish a postdoc fellowship for junior scientists in the field of Earth and Environmental sciences. The RFES fellowship provides support for early-career researchers to carry out a research project of their own design. By providing an up to 2-year payment for a full postdoctoral position, candidates will be empowered to compete for external early-career research grants (Emmy-Noether program of the German Science Foundation, ERC, S. Kovaleskaya program of the A. v. Humboldt Foundation), which would allow them to establish an independent research group at the University of Potsdam.

Already twice – in 2015 and 2016 – the RFES invited applications for a postdoctoral researcher position, which were available on the base of a full-time employment at the salary scale of E13 TV-L for 24 months. Two applicants successfully applied for these positions and both are currently working in the Department of Earth and Environmental sciences.

Natalia Ospina-Alvarez: Trace Elements and Emerging Pollutants
Natalia is working in analytical methods for the analysis of rock, soil and plant samples and trace-clean sampling/handling methodologies.
For further information visit Natalia’s blog or view a short intro-animation about her work.

Mitch D’Arcy: Past Climate Changes and Landscape Responses
Mitch is dating ancient glacial advances in the northern Argentinian Andes, to better understand how climates of this region may have changed in the past and why. He also studies terrestrial sediment deposits of the past ~100.000 years in order to unravel the complex relation between tectonically enforced mountain uplift and ongoing erosion.

How the RFES works

RFES fellows will be invited to work within the vibrant research environment at the RFES in Potsdam-Golm, with access to research facilities both at the university (Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences) and at neighboring research institutes in the Potsdam region. Teaching responsibilities are not part of this appointment. However, the University of Potsdam is committed to providing the successful applicant with a robust career-mentoring and teaching-skills program.

Key selection criteria are the quality of the proposal, its innovative potential, and its likely contribution to the state of knowledge in Earth and Environmental Sciences. We welcome applicants whose work may link to one or more research groups at the university’s Research Focus of Earth Sciences. A further criterion includes an excellent publication record.

Currently, no additional positions are available.
